Prunes
Surprisingly, this is a very popular question. Prunes are dried plums! They are a good source of fiber, low on the glycemic index, and support bone health. It’s no wonder prunes are so popular among people of all ages.
But not every plum can be a prune. The key to Sunsweet® Amaz!n™ Prunes is that we harvest a very special variety of plums at peak ripeness! This ensures the ideal balance of fresh flavor, juiciness, and nutrients are all preserved. Vitamins and minerals are sealed in with our unique drying process so you get the incredible nutritional benefits of prunes along with their delicious, fresh flavor.
Just as there are many ways to enjoy prunes, there are many names for them too. Most people simply say “prunes” but they are also referred to as dried plums or dried prunes too. We’re, of course, team “prune.”
Prunes can contribute to good health in so many ways! In fact, adding a serving of prunes is a healthy part of a balanced daily diet. Here are some of the top benefits of prunes:
- Prunes are low on the glycemic index at just 29¹ which means they raise the glucose (sugar) levels in your blood slowly, to help avoid spikes in your blood sugar levels and keep your appetite at bay.
- Prunes contain the mineral boron, which can aid in bone health and help with osteoporosis².
- Prunes contain potassium, an important mineral that ensures proper functioning of the heart and nerve responses throughout the body.
- Prunes contain vitamin A, which is essential for healthy vision.
- Prunes contain manganese, iron, and plant phenolics, which may help protect the cell membranes from free radical damage.
- Prunes are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Plus, they are a trusted way to support the digestive tract.
Numerous studies show that prunes support bone health in postmenopausal women. Prunes contain micronutrients including potassium - a mineral associated with a decreased risk of bone loss and osteoporosis. Prunes also contain magnesium, which is important for bone structure, and vitamin K, which plays an important role in bone mineralization. Additionally, prunes are filled with plant-based compounds called polyphenols, which promote bone health by reducing bone mineral loss.
Studies have shown that there are many advantages of eating prunes compared to other snack foods. Prunes have been known to help lower blood glucose levels, increase satiety, and suppress hunger. At only 100 calories per serving (40 grams or about 4 whole prunes), prunes contain 3 grams of dietary fiber and no fat. Additionally, prunes have a low glycemic index of only 29, which means they raise the glucose (sugar) levels in your blood slowly. This helps to avoid spikes in your blood sugar levels and can help keep your appetite at bay. Please check with your doctor before making any dietary changes.
Prunes are a naturally gluten-free food. A serving of prunes may be enjoyed as part of a restricted or gluten free diet. You may even want to try pureed prunes when baking. They can help aid in moisture retention for gluten-free baked goods and aid as a fat replacer. But since we are in the business of making delicious prunes and aren’t medical professionals, you’ll want to speak to your doctor before making any dietary changes.
Absolutely! Prunes are extremely versatile and there are several ways to enjoy them beyond simply snacking. When used as an ingredient, dried plums are good for everything from baked goods to hearty salads. They can act as a sugar-replacement when pureed and also help make cakes and breads extra moist! We encourage you to try some of our delicious prune recipes on our recipes page.
Nothing but delicious and nutritious prunes here! Our prunes contain only naturally occurring sugars, with no added sugar, ever.

Prunes contain soluble and insoluble fiber. These components work together to provide benefits for a healthier digestive tract³.
A serving size is 5 prunes or 1.5oz. Most people do not experience stomach upset with one serving of prunes a day or throughout the day. If you aren’t currently getting much fiber in your diet, you may want to start with 1 or 2 per eating occasion and work your way up to 5 per day for the best health benefits. Studies have shown that eating 9-10 prunes per day does not cause digestive problems and can in fact promote bone health. (study reference – Dr. Arjmandi prune & bone health study4).
Because of the incredible nutritional advantages of prunes listed above, Sunsweet® Amaz!n™ Prunes are an incredibly beneficial addition to your daily diet. And the best part? Working in your daily serving of prunes is easy!

Prune Juice
This is a very popular question because a lot of people wonder how you can juice dried fruit! Our plump and delicious pitted prunes (which, if you didn’t know, are actually dried plums!) are juiced through a steaming process that first rehydrates them. From there, the magic happens! We don’t want to give our secret process away, but essentially, they are simmered gently into a delicious juice full of the extraordinary and unique health benefits of prunes.
The amount of dietary fiber in prune juice is one of the big health benefits that sets it apart from other juices. Few pure fruit juices provide dietary fiber in any useful amounts because it is generally removed through the juicing process. Prunes, however, still maintain both soluble and insoluble fiber after the juicing process! Especially the soluble fiber. Soluble fiber attracts water and turns to gel during digestion. And soluble fiber has been said to help do amazing things like lower the risk of heart disease.
Unlike so many other fruit juices, Sunsweet Amaz!n Prune Juice does NOT contain any added sugar whatsoever. The sweet flavor of the juice comes from the natural sweetness of the prunes.
Prune juice is a good source of vitamins and minerals like potassium, riboflavin, vitamin B6, copper, and niacin, all of which support digestive health. Plus, it is also a good source of fiber, with 3 grams per 8oz serving. The nutrients work together, making it a natural laxative and offering potential relief from constipation.
All of these nutrients make the benefits of prune juice perfect for daily consumption. The following are the top benefits of prune juice:
Fiber: Sunsweet Amaz!n Prune Juice is an excellent source of dietary fiber. Very few pure fruit juices have similar prune juice advantages, and few can boast providing nearly as much fiber. Not only is fiber good for digestive balance, but it also helps give you natural energy to fuel you through the day.
Potassium: Our prune juice is a leading source of potassium. Potassium supports a healthy nervous system, helps your muscles work properly, and supports normal blood pressure.
It’s hard to believe that one of the prune juice advantages is that it tastes delicious. Although it contains no added sugar, Sunsweet Amaz!n Prune Juice is delightfully sweet with just the right amount of satisfying tartness. The juice is made from carefully harvested Sunsweet Amaz!n Prunes so that just the right level of sweetness is achieved from the fruit itself.
Yes! In fact, it’s beneficial when consumed in moderation and in conjunction with a balanced low-sugar diet. The soluble fiber in prune juice helps to slow down how quickly the sugars enter the bloodstream, which prevents the insulin spike and stabilizes blood sugar levels.
Additionally, because of their high amounts of sorbitol, a sugar alcohol with a slow absorption rate, prune juice has a low glycemic index of only 29. This helps avoid spikes in your blood sugar levels and can help keep your appetite at bay. However, it’s always important to seek medical advice from your physician to help you better determine the proper amount and frequency of consumption for maximum health benefits of prune juice.
Sunsweet Amaz!n Prune Juice has no preservatives or additives so it's perfect for babies. Especially because the benefits of prune juice for constipation can help when your baby's stomach is upset. A good rule of thumb is 1-ounce of prune juice per month of life, with a maximum daily dose of 4 ounces. You can give it alone or add to breast milk or formula to help treat constipation. However, it’s best to check with your baby’s pediatrician for medical advice on utilizing prune juice for a baby’s digestive health.
The benefits of drinking prune juice are enjoyed by people of all ages. People trying it for the first time often say that they’re impressed by the well-balanced, sweet flavor – and they usually ask for more!
In addition to drinking it straight from the glass, you can try prune juice in a smoothie or even as an addition to your coffee. Check out our cold-brew prune juice latte recipe and other prune recipes for more details about the versatility of prunes and prune juice.
