Sweet and Spicy Barbecued Brisket

1 1/2 cups ketchup

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup each: red wine vinegar and water

2 tbsp yellow mustard

2 tsp chili powder

1 tbsp each: worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke

1/2 tsp garlic salt

1 (9 oz container) Sunsweet® Plum Amazins

1 (3 to 4 lb) beef brisket, trimmed of excess fat


Stir together all ingredients except brisket in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer covered, for 30 minutes. Let cool slightly, then puree in a blender or food processor. While sauce is cooking, grill brisket for 5 minutes on each side over high heat to sear both sides well. Transfer to a foil pan (or a large square of heavy-duty foil). Spread sauce over the surface and seal well with additional heavy-duty foil. Grill over low heat for 3 hours, turning and shaking pan occasionally. (If it feels like liquid has cooked off open carefully and add an additional 1/2 cup water to pan.) Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with sauce from pan. Makes 8 servings.
